Openings on the Foundation Board of Directors

The California Bar Foundation is seeking applications for several positions on its Board of Directors for terms beginning January 1, 2011. For these positions, the Foundation seeks attorneys, judges, and members of the public who have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to the Foundation's charitable mission, who have previous board, public, or community service, and/or who are knowledgeable about charitable fundraising.

The California Bar Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization affiliated with the State Bar of California, dedicated to building a better justice system for all Californians. We champion full and equal access to the law, invest in the next generation of California's lawyers, educate Californians about their rights and responsibilities, and promote philanthropy throughout the legal community.

Through the voluntary gifts of lawyers, law firms, and other donors, the Foundation distributes grants to nonprofit organizations, courts, and bar associations for law-related projects; awards scholarships to law school students who intend to pursue public interest law careers or who come from diverse communities historically underrepresented in the legal profession; and supports an array of other educational programs. More information about the Foundation and its programs is available on our website, www.calbarfoundation.org.

The Board of Directors consists of a maximum of 25 members who are appointed by the State Bar's Board of Governors and three ex officio members. Members serve two-year terms and are expected to attend approximately five Board meetings per year and actively participate on at least two Board committees. The location of Board meetings typically rotates between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and most committee meetings are conducted by conference call. Board membership may also require attendance at the Foundation's Annual Scholarship Reception, meetings of the State Bar Board of Governors, and other Foundation-related events. All Board members are expected to participate in fundraising and annually make a personally significant financial contribution to the Foundation. For more information about Board member duties and expectations, please email lhatamiya@calbarfoundation.org.

The application deadline is Friday, August 13, 2010. To apply, submit (1) a resume and (2) a statement of interest and qualifications by 4:00 p.m. on August 13 via mail, fax, or e-mail to:
