Five California Lawyers Join California Bar Foundation Board of Directors

Nine Board Members Also Receive Reappointment

San Francisco — January 12, 2010 — The California Bar Foundation today announced the appointment of 14 individuals to the nonprofit organization's Board of Directors, including Holly J. Fujie, immediate past president of the State Bar of California. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2010, the Foundation is the statewide philanthropic organization for California's legal community.

Five lawyers began serving their initial two-year terms on the Board on January 1, 2010. They include John C. Fossum, partner emeritus in the Newport Beach office of Irell & Manella LLP; Justin T. Miller, director of the Legal Specialty Group at Union Bank, N.A.; Thomas Silk, a San Francisco-based legal expert on nonprofit law; Christy Susman, an intellectual property specialist with Jack Daniels Properties, Inc.; and Richard Tom, in-house counsel at Southern California Edison.

"To carry out our mission of ensuring that the justice system serves all Californians, it is important that our Board reflect the diversity and breadth of California's legal community," said Mario Camara, Board president. "We are thrilled to welcome such an esteemed and accomplished group of new Board members and to enjoy the continued dedication and experience of our reappointed Board members. They bring a wide range of professional experience, expertise, and networks that will benefit the Foundation and enable us to effectively carry out our work."

Continuing Board members appointed to additional two-year terms include Peter R. Boutin, managing partner of the San Francisco office of Keesal, Young & Logan; Martha K. Gooding, managing partner of the Irvine office of Howrey LLP; Bruce G. Iwasaki, a partner at Lim, Ruger & Kim, LLP, and the former executive director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles; Mark Parnes, assistant general counsel at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati; Paul Tepper, executive director of the Western Center on Law & Poverty; Theodore T. Ting, a San Francisco partner with Reed Smith LLP; and Douglas A. Winthrop, managing director and firm chair of Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin. Fujie, a shareholder at Buchalter Nemer, rejoins the Board after her ex officio term as State Bar president ended in September 2009. In addition, Lindsay L. Lee, managing member and general partner of Tidal Creek Capital Management, was reappointed to a one-year term commencing January 1.

The Foundation also announced its 2010 officers, who were elected by the Board in late 2009: Vice Presidents Winthrop and Vivian L. Kral, Parnes as secretary, and Lee as treasurer. Camara is serving the second year of his two-year term as president.

Appointments to the Foundation's Board of Directors are made by the State Bar of California's Board of Governors. Information about applying for 2011-2012 terms on the Board of Directors will be posted on the Foundation's website, www.calbarfoundation.org, in May, and the deadline for applications will be August 13, 2010.
